Catholic Teaching on Burial

The Church strongly prefers the burial of the body as a reflection of Christ’s own burial and as an expression of faith in the resurrection.

Burial in consecrated ground expresses:

  • The dignity of the human person
  • Hope in eternal life through Christ
  • Belief in the resurrection of the body
  • Continued oneness with our brothers and sisters in Christ

For this reason, the Church encourages burial in Catholic cemeteries where the faithful are laid to rest in sacred ground and remembered in prayer.

Catholic Teaching on Cremation

The Church permits cremation when it is chosen in Christian faith and not as a denial of the Resurrection. Since 1963, cremation has been allowed with the expectation that it is carried out with reverence.

However, the Church teaches that cremated remains must be treated with respect and placed in a permanent sacred resting place.

Cremated remains should:

  • Be buried or inurned in a Catholic cemetery
  • Be kept in a sacred, permanent location
  • Never be scattered, divided, or kept at home

The Church emphasizes that even in cremation, the human body remains sacred and destined for resurrection.

Church Instruction
Ad resurgendum cum Christo

The Vatican instruction Ad resurgendum cum Christo (“To Rise with Christ”) reaffirms that cremation is permitted, but only when Christian belief in the resurrection is preserved.

It teaches that the human body must always be treated with reverence and that burial in sacred ground best reflects the Church’s understanding of death, dignity, and eternal life.

Other Methods of Disposition
Not Approved by the Church

The Church evaluates new practices such as alkaline hydrolysis and human composting. These practices are not approved by the Catholic Church.

While civil practices may change, the Church continues to teach that burial in consecrated ground most fully expresses Christian faith in the resurrection of the body.
